As the next act commences, three elegantly-dressed upper-crust types
(Hal Schatz, Molly Oltrogge, and Diane Stone) come on stage, just oozing
culture out of their every pore. They carefully take their places, make
final adjustments to their tuxedo and evening gowns respectively, and
then they pause, as if a momentous occasion is imminent. The audience
is on the edges of their seats, and finally the fourth member of the
group (Nancy Burke) takes the stage. The audience erupts in thunderous
applause. No, wait. . . that happens at the end of the act.
Nancy sets herself just so, and the soundtrack to Glenn Miller's In
the Mood begins to play. Little did the hapless audience realize
that the elegance of the quartet belied their intentions. . .
When the main chick started to sing, and the other three joined in, the
audience was astonished to realize that they werethey
wereclucking the words to In the Mood. Clucking
like chickens! Hmm. Maybe that's why they changed the name to In
the Brood. . .
