As the poster and the show title imply, the gist of the show was a day
in the life of a couch potato. Based on TV shows, this year's Encore!
Encore! performances were centered around the lone figure of the Couch
Potato (David Grace), who was sitting in the center of the audience, in
this overstuffed easy chair, surrounded by candy wrappers, potato-chip
bags, empty pop cans, and other incriminating evidences of his culinary
tastes.
Once the lights dimmed, Couch Potato entered the room, grumbling to his unseen wife about his rough day. He flops down into his easy chair, picks up his enormous universal remote, and proceeds to watch three different TVs for the rest of the evening. His three "televisions" were three performance stages, and each time he clicked the remote, another one of the stages would light up, and a segment was performed. Of course, when empowered by a remote control, one is tempted to channel-surf, and then who knows what will show up on the screen. . .?
All of the above being the case, the decor was designed to match: the Lincoln Center's Canyon West Room was outfitted as much like a residential living room as possible. In addition to the (non-alcoholic) beverage bars, there were several small refrigerators around the room, from which people could grab a can of pop to drink before the show, during the show, or during the intermission. The desserts, served at intermission as usual, were contained in custom-packed aluminum TV-dinner trays with custom-printed covers.
